SHILLONG: Chief Secretary WMS Pariat on Wednesday assured the Meghalaya Upper Primary School Teachers Association (MUPSTA) that their long pending demands would be approved before the 2013 elections.

The MUPSTA has taken up the path of agitation as the State Government has failed to fulfill its various demands including increasing the salary of assistant teachers from six thousand to ten thousand rupees and headmasters salary from ten thousand rupees to twelve thousand rupees.

Earlier, around hundred teachers from different parts of the state staged a sit in demonstration in the city with placards and banners pressing for their long pending demands.

Later, a delegation of teachers met the Chief Secretary WMS Pariat and held discussions on their demands.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, MUPSTA general secretary Kenneth Shadap said, “The Chief Secretary assured us that our demands would be approved before the elections.”

The Chief Secretary during the meeting also asked the delegation to meet him after ten days for knowing the status of their demands.

The MUPSTA is following on its previous demand which includes a good education policy for the state.

“I am quite sure that if we have a good education policy there won’t be any more agitations from teachers in the State,” he said.

The MUPSTA is also of the view that the Right to Education Act should be immediately implemented in the State while adding that the text books for students under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan should reach schools before the commencement of the academic session.
