SHILLONG: Advocating the need to discard certain age old traditions for ensuring rapid progress of the society, Governor RS Mooshahary said the existing work culture in the region requires a rethink for development of this part of the country.

Speaking at a special programme on regional tribal and folk culture organized at Ramakrishna Vivekananda Cultural Centre as part of the 150th Birth Anniversary celebration of Swami Vivekananda here on Monday, Mooshahary said, “People in the region (NE) are known for their slow work culture which is not helping things in the present situation.”

While stressing on the importance of preserving the rich tradition of the tribal people of the region , the Governor was also of the view that certain age old customs need to be discarded to allow reformation and progress for the welfare of the society.

There are a few good practices of the Western world which should be accepted and added to the traditions without losing the identity, he added.

Mooshahary said people should learn the zeal from the missionaries for they inspire confidence in others with their sincerity and love of serving people.

Earlier, Swami Sumanasanandaji Maharak from Ramakrishna Mission Cherrapunjee, while addressing the gathering said that the Mission is trying to reach out to the people from the region ‘who are deprived of modern amenities’.

Swami Vishwatmanandaji Maharaj, coordinator of Swami Vivekananda 150th Birth Anniversary celebration, Belur Math, also spoke on the influence of television, media and mobile phones on tribal societies while adding that migration to cities is a major cause for fast disappearing languages of some of the tribes.
