NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha member Wansuk Syiem on Monday opposed the Centre’s move to stop the vital Northeastern Region Community Resources Management Project from this month.
Raising a hue and cry in the Upper House, Wansuk revealed that the much needed scheme for community development will be stopped by the nodal DoNER ministry from July 31. The scheme is uplifting poor people of the economically backward region for the past 20 years.
Bringing the issue under ‘urgent matter of public importance’, Wansuk said the project is aided by international agencies like IFAD. The livelihood project with regular staff was helping many under poverty.
The unique project aims at social mobilisation, organisation and capacity building to tap and realise the potential of the communities. This is done by employing  time tested traditional value systems and culture, the MP said.
The project also intervenes with the economic and social activities and infrastructure with predominant thrust on income generating activities to achieve economic transformation.
The project has a regional society headquartered in Shillong to supervise and support the district teams who implement the project in the field. If fund is a constraint, it should be made available from NEC, she added.
