SHILLONG: The first surgery on Agnes Kharshiing that was scheduled for Monday will be conducted on Wednesday morning.
Agnes’s brother John Kharshiing said doctors at NEIGRIHMS doctors have confirmed about the surgery.
Dr DM Thappa, the NEIGRIHMS director, told The Shillong Times that Agnes is conscious but her speech is still incoherent. “The surgery is a normal procedure and there is no complication. A specialist will perform the surgery. She will take some time to recover as she has been hurt on the head,” he said.
After Agnes was admitted on November 8 with multiple injuries from the near-fatal assault, doctors could not carry out surgery as her condition was unstable.
There were consultations between the family and the doctors for the last few days regarding the surgery as the family wanted to ensure her safety since there were head injuries.
On the other hand, Amita Sangma is recovering and undergoing physiotherapy.
Assembly panel’s visit
Meanwhile, the Assembly Committee on Women Empowerment led by Chairperson Ampareen Lyngdoh visited Agnes and Amita in the hospital on Tuesday. Other members who accompanied Lyngdoh were HM Shangpliang and Miani D Shira.
The committee members were accompanied by the director and the deputy director of NEIGRIHMS.
The committee enquired about the well-being of the victims and the security arrangements for them in the hospital.
