Swachh Bharat Summer Internship 2.0 kicks off
SHILLONG: The NSS Unit of Lady Keane College has flagged off the second edition of the Swaach Bharat Summer Internship (SSBI) 2.0 on Tuesday, a release issued here informed. C. Massar, Principal of Lady Keane College acknowledged the efforts of the volunteers for participating in such community-based programs and encouraged them to pursue excellence and commitment to reap positive results in their endeavour. Altogether 75 volunteers will be rendering 50 hours of community service to each village spread across the East and West Khasi Hills. The SBSI programme, this year, will cater to the needs of ten villages in areas of waste management, composting, eradication of open defecation among others.

Ban on dumping of plastic, sand mining in Ri Bhoi
NONGPOH: The District Magistrate (DM) of Ri Bhoi, Nongpoh passed the prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC by pulling a close on dumping of used plastic in Ri Bhoi on Tuesday, as it is in serious contravention of various Environment Protection Acts & Waste Management Rules, 2016 and Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. Futher, the DM has also ordered ban on mining of sand from rivers, streams or channels with the explicit or implicit intention to cause environmental degradation and threat to the biodiversity within the district. The order has been issued in view of indiscriminate disposal of used plastic polythene and plastic products in various forms. Also, sand has been dredged illegally in the upstream and downstream of BUG bridges at Iewsier, Lailad and other rivers in Ri Bhoi.

KSU seeks drug abuse respite
SHILLONG: Witnessing a rise in drug users, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Nongstoin circle urged the state Health Minister AL Hek to set up a room for detoxification and to provide a psychiatrist.The union stated that as per information from the Nongstoin Police Department, there are 300 drug users within the town and pointed out that there are many drug users who want to come out of their addiction. Further, the union has requested the minister for facilities such as CT scan, operation theatre, central oxygen line, ultrasound, ICU, X-ray, endoscopy and blood bank. Moreover, the union said that the government should speed up the inauguration of GNM School of Nursing and Maternity and Child Hospital besides the sanction of various posts in the hospital.

Shillong Run 10k next month
SHILLONG: The Social and Economic Life Development department of KJP Synod Sepngi through the agency for Sustainable Development Initiative will once again organise the Shillong Run 10K-2019 on August 10. Informing this here on Tuesday, Director of the department Rev SC Diengngan said that the event is being organised to create awareness on mainstreaming persons with disabilities (PwDs) in the society besides addressing the issues and hardships faced by the PwDs. The event will also help in raising funds for the projects of the Synod established for the welfare of the PWDs, adding last year around 30 PWDs participated and they expect more participation.

Disaster management workshop
NONGPOH: The District Disaster and Management Authority (DDMA) of Ri Bhoi organised a one-day awareness programme-cum-workshop on preparedness of disaster management plan for industries and dams at the DRDA Conference Hall, Nongpoh on Tuesday. The programme was attended by the members of different industrial units of Industrial estate Umiam and Byrnihat, officials from MePDCL, DCIC, ITI and others. S.Bordoloi, DM Consultant was the resource person for the day. K Wanniang, DDMO highlighted on the introduction of DDMA, District Management Act 2005. The Additional Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi, D.P Kharsati, who is also the CEO of DDMA, said that workshop aims to create awareness on the potential hazards.

Awareness on Mission Organic
TURA: An awareness programme on Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCD-NER) was organised by the District Horticulture Officer and Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) of West Garo Hills at Selsella and Dadenggre C&RD Blocks recently. The information on how to get the Organic Certification and its benefits were also explained by the Horticulture Development Officer of Tikrikilla C&RD Block, C M Momin.
