SHILLONG: More than 70 people were benefitted by the medical camp organised by Bakdil run Salamanpara PHC at Chepagre village in South West Garo Hills on Thursday.
The health camp included free health check up, awareness on tuberculosis and infant immunisation.
Dr. L Lawrence Khaifi, Medical & Health Officer, Salmanpara PHC, conducted free health check up and 68 patients have benefited with free medicines.
Sensitising the villagers about tuberculosis, MHA Luish Sangma said that if a person struggling with cough for more than two weeks they must go for medical check up.
“We take it very lightly if we are experiencing cough even for one month without knowing that this might be symptom of TB, you should get immediate check up if you are coughing for minimum two weeks,” he said.
He also informed that TB could lead a person to death if not treated on time but it is curable too if a person consults with the doctor on time.
“Women have to take up the responsibility of making home as men go to the market and spend time in drinking,” a woman resident said. Most of the daily wage employees under MGNREGS are also women.
They are working with the babies tied to their back, however men get the benefits of using the money because due to illiteracy as most women cannot even write their name, men go to the bank to withdraw the money.
Other common diseases both in children and adults are skin infection and diarrhoea. These are because they drink unfiltered water directly from the stream and they took bath in river waters.
Free medicines were provided and some patients have been referred to Ampati civil hospital to have x-ray and sonography tests.
The village Nokma and staff from Salmanpara PHC and Anangpara sub-centre also attended the camp.
