SHILLONG: The State Opposition has slammed the MUA Government for making haste in announcing the dates for Municipal elections in Garo Hills without taking into confidence the different NGOs who have been opposing the civic polls in the State.
Accusing the State Government of making a hush hush decision on the controversial civic polls in the four municipalities of Garo Hills, Leader of Opposition Conrad Sangma said, “The State Government has taken the decision of going ahead with the civic polls without consulting the NGOs which will again lead to a stalemate like in the previous case.”
According to Sangma, the State Government should take into confidence the people of Garo Hills before going ahead with the elections.
Last year, the State Government had made a similar attempt to hold civic polls in Garo Hills but had to call it off at the eleventh hour due to the deteriorating law and order situation in the region.
The Garo Students’ Union has already announced its opposition to the civic polls and it is likely that other organisations would follow suit.
The proposed civic polls in Garo Hills would be held on August 6 while the counting of votes would take place on August 9.
