SHILLONG: The Home department will convene a meeting of senior police officials on Wednesday to discuss the killing of two policemen in an accidental firing in East Garo Hills last week.

“I will convene a meeting with senior police officials to discuss the incident tomorrow,” Home Minster HDR Lyngdoh said over phone from New Delhi on Tuesday. Stern action will be taken against those responsible for the incident, he added. The two policemen were killed when Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commandos and 5th MLP battalion personnel mistakenly attacked each other with heavy exchange of fire on July 3.

A departmental inquiry led by a senior police official has already been ordered into the incident.

“I have made it clear that such an incident should not recur in future,” the minister said.
