Shillong: Concerned over the increasing incidents of thefts in the residential quarters of the teachers at NEHU campus, the North-Eastern Hill University NEHU Association of Teachers (NEHUTA) has questioned the credibility of the University level Security Committee.
It could be mentioned that during the past one-and-a-half months, there have been five cases of theft in broad day light in the teachers’ residences inside the University campus.
These thefts have created a sense of insecurity among campus dwellers. Theft cases have also been reported from the different departments, particularly stealing of computers.
“The NEHU Vice-Chancellor’s residence is very well protected with grills, gates and a dozen of guards and the Registrar is staying in the city and does not have a firsthand idea of seriousness regarding security in the Campus,” the NEHUTA claimed.
According to sources, these theft cases have been reported to the police, but the University authorities have not done anything so far in this regard, the Association alleged.
NEHUTA also alleged that there was no enquiry from the University level Security Committee on the theft cases and no responsibility was fixed for the security lapses.
Sources also informed that the number of private security guards called ‘Rangers’ have been increasing day by day and at present their number is nearly 200.
Huge expenditure is being incurred on these security guards, but most of the campus dwellers feel that the security guards do not do their job sincerely and efficiently and the problem persists.
The sources alleged that these security guards are mostly seen sleeping, chatting and relaxing while on duty. They do not bother to enquire from anyone even strangers.
“They have become like white elephants for NEHU,” lambasted a source.
