Shillong: The Union Ministry of Consumers Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has decided to construct more food storages in the Northeastern states, an official said on Monday.
”Steps have been taken for construction of godowns in the northeast to improve storage capacity of foodgrains in the region and ensure speedy movement of grains from procuring states to distribution centres,” the official said on condition of anonymity said.
An amount of Rs 568.17 crore has been sanctioned for construction of these food storages, the official added.
The official said creation of an additional capacity of 5.4 lakh tones for foodgrains storage is under consideration of the Centre for under a special scheme which, will ensure that at least four months’ stock is present in the North-East at any point of time. (UNI)
