16 militants lay down arms

Imphal: Sixteen militants of various groups on Tuesday laid down arms to Manipur DGP Y Joykumar and IGAR(S) Maj Gen Krishnan at IGARS headquarters Mantripukhri.

The militants belonged to United National Liberation Front (UNLF), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), Pakan Reunification Army (PRA), People’s United Liberation Front (PULF) and United Tribal Liberation Army (UTLA).

They surrendered nine sophisticated weapons, five small arms and ammunition. DGP Y Joykumar said police would ensure that they live without fear and they will be properly rehabilitated.

Large scale surrender, during the past one year, shows the change in the mindset of the people, he further said. Maj Gen Krishnan said over 260 militants surrendered during the past one year and the Manipur government awarded them a good rehabilitation programme. (UNI)

 NDFB not involved in extortion

Guwahati: The National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) on Tuesday denied link with a recently held extortionist and claimed that the outfit was not not involved in either extortion or harassment of people in any manner.

The youth, recently caught while extorting money from the people in Chirang district, was not a member of the NDFB, its Assistant Secretary of Information and Publicity Wing P Samijing said in a statement. (PTI)
