Manipuri rebels held in Assam
Guwahati: Three militants of the Manipuri outfit Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) were arrested from here on Saturday.
A joint team of police and CRPF arrested the trio from separate locations in the city.
The raids were carried out based on information provided by intelligence agencies, police said.
Among the arrested is a ‘commander’ of the outfit, Jaishankar, and the outfit’s ‘finance secretary’ Otobam Sunil.
The third militant has been identified as Umnan Uday Singh.
Incriminating documents and cash were recovered from the trio. (UNI)
Naga writer arrested for carrying grenade
Kohima: Panic gripped Kohima town when news spread that a vehicle, that was parked near War Cemetery here, carried an LPG cylinder tied to a hand grenade.
According to official sources here today, the hand grenade was tied near the regulator of a gas cylinder used to drive the jeep, which was noticed by some security force personnel, who informed the police.
On receiving the report, the area was cordoned off and Army and Police bomb disposal squads called in to diffuse the bomb.
After removal of the hand grenade, the vehicle was taken to South Police Station.
Later, the owner of the jeep, a writer, was arrested and charged under Explosives Act.
According to police, the owner admitted that he found the grenade while digging his compound and had tied it to the LPG in order to scare away cylinder thieves. (UNI)
Insurgent activities in Tripura gaines momentum
Agartala: Insurgency in Tripura has gained momentum following fresh recruitment in the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and merger of All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) with NLFT, police said here on Friday.
Police said that there was fierce incident between NLFT militants and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans yesterday in Khengdra Royajapara of Dhalai district but no report of causality had yet been reported.
The militants opened fire on TSR jawans when they were in village on anti-insurgency operation. TSR had also retaliated with counter fire and exchange of fire continued for more than half-an hour.
At least three incidents of kidnappings were reported in the state and eight poor tribal villagers who had been abducted by the gun-totting militants last months were traceless for past 24 days.
Moreover, the state home department officials said that as many as 15 surrendered NLFT militants had gone back to the outfit in the past one month from Khowai, Longtarai Valley and Kanchanpur sub-divisions.
Altogether 300 cadres of the outfit had been undergoing training in Bangladesh and Myanmar hideouts who would reportedly be engaged in militant activities in Tripura soon, the officials stated. (UNI)
