SHILLONG: NEIGRIHMS is likely to have a new Director by September end with the present director, Dr ME Yeolekar, scheduled to relinquish his office by September 20, sources informed on Wednesday.
According to sources, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has already made up its mind to accept Dr Yeolekar’s resignation.
The present director had submitted his resignation following the crisis in the institute after the MBBS student had gone on strike demanding the immediate increase of the faculties’ strength.
Despite submitting his resignation, there were indications that Yeolekar was eager to hold on to his post for some more time as he had planned to hold a governing council meeting on August 29 to discuss his resignation issue.
“Dr Yeolekar wanted to hold the governing council meeting so that there were would be pressure on the part of the council members requesting him to continue as the Director. But with reports that that Union Ministry has decided to accept his resignation Dr Yeolekar finally decided to call off the meeting of the governing council,” sources said.
Following reports that Dr Yeolekar would be leaving NEIGRIHMS, the present Dean Dr Santa Singh has already begun to project himself as an aspirant to the post of Director of the institute.
But there are major question marks over whether Dr Singh would be a fit candidate to take over as the new Director of NEIGRHIMS.
A review of the performance of the Obstetric and Gynaecology department in NEIGRIHMS of which Dr Singh is the head, tells much about his capability as an administrator.
“Forgot about people from outside, even NEIRIHMS staff are going to other hospitals for delivering their babies. This clearly shows that even the own staff of NEIGRIHMS does not have any faith on the Obstetric and Gynaecology department,” sources said.
The State Government has also raised questions over the reasons which have prompted the staffs to go to other hospitals for their deliveries, sources said. Inside sources also revealed said that Dr Singh had the habit of issuing verbal orders only and not in writing.
“Even when he (Dr Singh) would call for a meeting of all the departments there would not be any agenda. Not only this, Dr Singh would inform about any meeting just an hour or two before the same. The heads of various departments face great difficulties since they are not given any time to come prepared for such meeting,” the inside sources added.
