Office picketing in Ri-Bhoi

SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee (JAC), a conglomeration of various NGOs in Ri-Bhoi have decided to organise a one-day office picketing on Thursday to protest the Government’s decision to recognise the Marngar community as Scheduled Tribes.

Following a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi district on Wednesday, JAC chairman Donkupar Sumer said the office picketing is a mark of protest against the Government decision.

“We are pleased after being informed by the Deputy Commissioner that he had written to the State Government about the opposition of the NGOs on according ST status to the Marngar community,” Sumer said.

The Deputy Commissioner, during the meeting with RBYF and the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong, assured to stop issuing of Scheduled Tribe certificates to the Marngar community until the State Government issued a fresh order in this connection.

Meanwhiel, the Ri-Bhoi district administration has imposed Section 144 CrPC throughout of district following the office-picketing call by the JAC.
