Guwahati: Gauhati High Court has asked the petitioner of the PIL (47/2011), the legislators of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) of Assam to submit details and all relevant documents regarding alleged harassment caused by the administration to ‘Indian citizens’ who have been declared ‘doubtful’ voters by the Foreigners Tribunals in the state.

The details have to be submitted before the court by September 26 next.

The legislators of the AIUDF in the said PIL filed before Gauhati High Court alleged that large number of Indian citizens in different districts of Assam including Dhubri, Goalpara had been subjected to harassment and put in detention camps by the administration after they had been declared as ‘doubtful’ voters (D voters) by various foreigners tribunals in the state.

Taking up the PIL for hearing a Division Bench f the High Court comprising Justice Amitava Roy and Justice Anima Hazarika asked the petitioners to submit before the court detail documents and evidence about how many Indian citizens have been declared as ‘D’ voters in the State and set a deadline for September 26 for the purpose.

The AIUDF is a political party formed by over a dozen minority organisations in Assam.

It has been very vociferous in accusing the administration in Assam for subjecting many genuine Indian citizens to harassment after they had been declared ‘D’ voters.

The AIUDF has 18 legislators in 126-member Assam assembly. It is the single largest opposition party in Congress-ruled Assam where unabated illegal migration from Bangladesh is a burning problem.
