Hiked road tax pushes up bus fares in Aizawl

Aizawl: Aizawlites would soon pay highest bus fares in India with the latest revision of the city bus fares coming into effect from September 1.

In line with the Mizoram Vehicle Taxation (Amendment) Act, 2011, which comes into force from September one, the state transport authority has revised the city bus fares.

Now, a passenger will have to pay Rs three for travelling from one stop to another. Passenger can travel two to four bus stops with Rs five, which will be increased to Rs eight for the fifth and seventh stop. Rs ten is required for a distance of eight stops with no additional charge till eleventh bus stops.

For covering 12 bus stops, a passenger will have to pay Rs 12 with no additional charge till the next stop, but will increase to Rs 13 from the 14th till the 15th stop.

A passenger will have to pay Rs 15 for covering 16 bus stops, with no additional charge till the next two stops.

Commuting a distance of one bus stop to the next 20 to 27 bus stops it require Rs 15.

The new city bus fares comes with the revised road taxes, an average 50 per cent increase for non-transport vehicles and 20 per cent hike for transport vehicles, to be in force from September one.

“This is the first revision of road taxes in Mizoram since 1997,” H Darzika, secretary to the state’s transport department, said a press conference here on Monday.

Prior to 1997, the Assam Motor Vehicles Taxation Act 1936 was enforce in Mizoram. (UNI)
