TURA: The District Magistrate West Garo Hills has, under section 144 Cr.PC, prohibited fishing by illegal methods from the rivers and streams in the district with immediate effect.

The District Magistrate, in his order issued on September 1, 2011, stated that some individuals or group of persons are resorting to illegal fishing by using dynamite, generators, local poison, bleaching powder, DDT, etc, thereby endangering aquatic life and leading to mass destruction local and rare species of fish, besides contaminating the water.

Therefore, it has been found necessary to take emergent step to prevent such illegal and wanton destruction of aquatic life, the order said.
