Exorcist arrested for ‘sacrificing’ 7-yr-old girl

Ballia (UP): An exorcist was arrested along with three others for sacrificing a seven-year-old girl in Sandeh village in Phephna area here, police said on Saturday. They said Binu had gone missing on Thursday and her body was recovered yesterday from a well in the village. The father of the deceased, Avadhesh Upadhaya, had complained to the police that the said exorcist had lured his daughter, decked her up before performing her puja on Navratri and then thrown her in the well as sacrifice, police said. Further investigations into the incident were on, the police said. (PTI)

6 killed, 28 injured in road accident

Pali/Jaipur: Six people were killed and 28 members of a group of students and teachers injured seriously in a collision between a private bus and a truck trailer near Sande Rao in this district of Rajasthan early on Saturday. The bus was carrying around 35 students and teachers of Jaipur- based private engineering college on a tour to Mount Abu when it rammed into the trailer at Kenpura village near Sande Rao around 0500 hrs on Saturday. According to police sources the head-on collision left five passengers dead on the spot while one succumbed later on. The dead were identified as teacher Meira Agrawal, students Umaid and Vijendra Mehra, drivers of the both the vehicles and cleaner of the bus.

The injured were admitted to a hospital in Sumerpur from where two were referred to Jodhpur and three to Pali for treatment, the police sources said. (UNI)

6 commit suicide in Delhi in 24 hours

New Delhi: Six people allegedly committed suicide in the Capital in 24 hours. According to police, three members of a family, living in Subhash Nagar area of west Delhi, allegedly committed suicide as they were unable to pay their loans and debts. They were found dead on Thursday morning. Vijay (60) was found hanging in his residence, while his wife Meena (53) and daughter Sonia (18) ended their life by slitting their wrist, an official said on Saturday. In another incident in Sultan Puri, a 50-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide as she was depressed over her daughters not getting married. The victim identified as Emrati Devi was found hanging in her house, police said. (UNI)

2 women commit suicide

Shivpuri, MP: Two women have committed suicide in this district during the past 24 hours, police said. Newly-married Lali Kushwah (19) killed herself by jumping into a well in Lengda village. The body was found yesterday. She was missing for the past two days. Exasperated by illness, Sarjubai (69) hanged hefself in Thakurpura Basti here yesteday, police added. (UNI)

Three killed in road mishap

Ara: Aghaura Block Agriculture Officer Tejanandan Ram and two others were killed in road mishap on National Highway-30 under Udwant Nagar police station in Bhojpur district on Saturday. Police said here Mr Ram and two others were coming from Bhabhua to Ara when their car skided in a road side ditch filled with rain water under Udwant Nagar police station area. All the three died on the spot in the incident. ”The bodies had been sent for postmortem,” police further added. (UNI)

Teen immolates self

Satna: A 15-year-old girl has committed suicide by immolating herself in this district’s Sikdaura village, police said. Reetu Tripathi poured Kerosene Oil on her body and set herself on fire last night. She sustained serious burns and later died in her house before being admitted to hospital. The girl was said to be mentally challenged, police added. (UNI)

South Indian couple commits suicide

Panaji: A South Indian couple. working as information technology consultants, allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves from a ceiling fan in a flat at Merces, near here. Police said Anand Rathidevan (39) and his wife Deepa (36), hailing from Bangalore, had left a handwritten suicide note, dated October 3. Police said when neighbours informed about a foul stench emanating from the flat, a police team rushed to the flat on Friday and broke open the door and found the couple dead. The suicide note, revovered in the room, said nobody should be held responsible for their extreme step as they had lived life on their own terms and ended life on their own will. The bodies have been preserved in the GMC Morgue. The case is being investigated, police added. (UNI)

More bhung cultivation destroyed

Srinagar: More Bhung cultivation has been destroyed by Jammu and Kashmir police and Excise department officials in south Kashmir district of Anantnag. Official sources said here this afternoon that police and Excise officials launched a joint operation at village Hattipora, Hassnapora and Tulkhun in Anantnag district following a tip-off that some farmers were cultivating banned crops. During the raids bhung cultivated over more than 60 kanals of land was destroyed. They said cases against the land owners were registered, but no one was arrested. So far bhung cultivated over thousands of kanals of land has been destroyed in the Kashmir valley during this summer. (UNI)

Goods train derails

Bijnore (UP): The engine and 14 wagons of a goods train derailed due to a crack in the track at Mehmoodpur in the district on Saturday. The train travelling from Muradabad to Sahranpur derailed at around 6 AM, railway officials said, adding nearly 500 metres of track was damaged in the incident. Rail traffic has been disrupted in the area. (PTI)

Fire destroys 15 shops

Siliguri: At least 15 shops of traders at Pani Tanki market, about 30 km north of this town, were destroyed in a fire early on Saturday morning. Fire brigade and police said leaping flames engulfed merchandise worth several lakh of rupees at 15 clustered shops of Pani Tanki market within 70 minutes before fire fighters could control it. There had been no report of any casualty in the fire, which brokeout around 0620 hrs. Local MLA Sunil Tirky, who is also a minister, rushed to the area to oversee the situation and assured the affected to try help for rehabilitation support. (UNI)
