27 cows seized at Pynursla, 3 truck drivers held

SHILLONG: Police on Friday seized 27 cows supposed to be smuggled to Bangladesh at Pynursla.
Acting on a tip off, Pynursla police laid a trap and intercepted three trucks (ML05 E 8381, ML05 F 7632 and ML05 B 0792 ), which were carrying these cows to be ferried to Bangladesh.
Police also arrested the drivers of these trucks — Debarwel Mawiong of Siatbakon village, Rebilstar Lyngdoh and Raplang Umsong both from Nongmadan Shad Sngi, Pynursla.
Police later handed over the drivers and the cattles to the Superintendent of Custom office in Pynursla.
Sources informed that the cattle traders are using Laitlyngkot as place to hide these animals before transporting them through Pynursla.
It is learnt that normally the cattle smugglers would carry the cattles by truck till Nongshken. After which, they would transport these cows to Bangladesh on foot through Hat Thymnmai Lyngkhat, Umiuh and Nongjri.
With this seizure, the police have intensified patrolling in Pynursla, Sohra, Shella and Mawsynram since these villages are close to the Indo-Bangladesh international border.
Earlier, it was reported that the surrendered HNLC cadres is running the cattle smuggling racket.
According to sources, the surrendered cadres are engage in the collection of money from the trucks carrying cattle for smuggling to Bangladesh.
Sources said that normally on single night around 35 to 40 trucks ferry cows to Bangladesh.
It may be reminded that Over 10,000 cattle estimated to be valued at over Rs 13 crore are seized only by the BSF every year along the border in Assam and Meghalaya, and these are auctioned at local markets besides other places at Khanapara in the Ri-Bhoi district which are purchased by the cartels belonging to the surrendered cadres.
