SHILLONG: The usual shifting of traffic movement during night hours in the city have earned strong exception from the public as they say that without any proper signal in place, things may turn out to be fatal.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, a resident of Barik said that the road from the rotary near State Central Library towards Civil Junction remains one way and turns two-way after 8 o’clock in the evening. “But this is not known by many as speeding cars might cause catastrophic results in the future,” he said.

Similarly the Civil Hospital Junction which allows vehicles to go towards Barik straight instead of from the rotary near State Central Library in the evening also poses vicious danger, said many. This junction, said residents, is used by both small and heavy vehicles including pedestrians as it connects many directions in the city but it has been seen that vehicles and public are not aware of the change in traffic movement taking effect in the evening hours.

Residents who use these roads on a daily basis feel that the authorities should have taken into consideration these issues since the highway is also used by many vehicles from outside the state round the clock. In this scenario, many car owners from the town said that a proper and effective traffic light signaling system would have done wonder since such computerized poles is designed for smooth flow of both human and vehicular traffic.
