SHILLONG: In a major setback to the Congress, around three thousand of its workers shifted their allegiance to the NCP on Thursday.

The massive group of three thousand Congress workers led by Renikton Lyngdoh, former finance secretary of the MPCC and working president of the Mawkyrwat Block Congress joined the Nationalist Congress Party at a conference organised by the Block Nationalist Congress Party at Mawkyrwat, West Khasi Hills on Thursday.

NCP leader Conrad Sangma termed it as a result of rumblings within the State Congress.

The NCP is confident that inclusion of three thousand Congress workers in their ranks would boost the party’s chances in the 2013 Assembly polls in the State.

The function was attended by senior NCP leader PA Sangma, Union Minister of State Agatha Sangma and Rajya Sabha MP Thomas Sangma.
