SHILLONG: For 39 years now, the people of Mawkhap near Pynursla remain neglected by the government. The people here have to travel for almost two hours daily to reach the main road due to lack of transportation and absence of a fully-constructed road.
The village with over 200 households situated on a steep gorge near Pynursla is ignored as is evident from the absence of a road connecting the village with the main highway.
The plight of the villagers was well heard during the leadership of (L) BB Lyngdoh, former chief minister of Meghalaya where steps were taken to construct roads which were left half-done.
“The road is half done and no development has taken place since then. The concerned representative is not paying any heed to this problem”, a villager said on Saturday .The villagers apprised the local MLA, Prestone Tynsong of the problem but to no avail. “We don’t know when will we see a road extending till the village, ” said an elderly villager. She also expressed fear of lost of identity of the village lamenting “over the past few years, many local residents have left the village because of this problem. It’s high time the government starts thinking about the betterment of the rural lot.” Progress was however witnessed in some areas where an SSA school extending till class VII has been set up. “We only urge the government to provide us with a road and bring about development here, “a villager said.
