SHILLONG: As is the fate of all other government schemes in the state, the Aadhaar enrollment has also taken a backseat thanks to the delay tactics adopted by the state government.
It is learnt that in states like Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur, where enrollment is going on in full swing, the Department of Posts, Government of India has been allotted with the task by the respective state governments among other registrars – who are also in the process of enrollment.
It is learnt that the state government here will organize a workshop before going ahead with this much needed enrollment.
The workshop is likely to be attended by senior officers of the state government alongside other representatives from the implementing agencies.
But postal authorities, who earlier started it on a trial basis, are of the opinion that almost two and half months have passed but there is no trace of the workshop, so far. The state government has halted the process of enrollment in the month of August.
It is interesting to note here that the state government cannot allow Aadhaar enrollment in the state by independent multi-registrars, whereas finalization of a common format for KYR+ (Know Your Resident) data collection in order to avoid any confusion and duplication and also to avoid any unwanted inconvenience to the residents during the enrollment process.
In this regard the state government has proposed the Unique Identification Authority of India to conduct a workshop in order prepare a common format for KYR+ collection of data in order to benefit every resident. The time and date of the said workshop will be finalized in due course of time.
However, a source from the Office of Chief Post Master General (CPMG), Shillong informed that the concern of the state government does not suffice since the enrollment is done through a software especially designed for this purpose which records biometric impression of the retina of individuals, which is unmatchable with any other person in the world. “The same can be accessed by anyone anywhere in the world,” said the source adding the state government in unaware about it as there is no question of duplication under this system.
“The government here is apprehensive about the multi-registrar enrollment adopted in all other states,” said the source. She even warned that the Aadhaar number should not be mistaken as a document of citizenship but it is a robust proof of identity.
Meanwhile, the general public wants the Aadhaar enrollment to start soon since the allotment of the same will help them in availing not only various government beneficiary schemes, such as NREGA, PDS among others but will also help those who want to pursue higher studies in the country and abroad.
