With the new source of water supply scheme, surrounding villages of Jowai town will be also benefited as the PHE Department is in a motive to extend the water supply scheme to Mihmyntdu and Ialong villages.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, the PHE Chief Engineer, H Prasad informed that the department is expected to commission the project by June 2012.“The intake that was raised is nearing completion and once it is completed pump house and pump installation will be constructed”, Prasad said.
“There were various local issues including delayed of issuance of trading license to the non-tribal contractor which has affected the smooth progress of the construction works”. The construction works of the project was started in June 2007.
The water project is the renovation of Myntdu Water Supply Scheme that was commissioned in two phases in the year 1980 and 1985 respectively.
According to the PHE chief engineer, the distribution system particularly laying of pipelines have taken little time but now completed except the river cross at river Myntdu.
The chief engineer informed that Jowai water project and Raliang water project are centrally sponsored water projects whereas the rest are implementing under state schemes and shortage of fund is one of the main reasons that delayed all state funded projects.
