Differently abled people need our support: Lanong

Barte Kadam organised in Jowai

 JOWAI: “It is our duty to help and support children with special abilities”, said Deputy Chief Minister, Bindo M Lanong.

Addressing the Barte Kadam III, orgnised by the Parents Association for Disabled in Jaintia Hills district here on Friday, Lanong said, “They need not only our love but also our wholehearted support”.

The Deputy Chief Minister while lauding the initiatives taken by the Parents Association in Jaintia Hills suggested that the formation of a society in Jowai similar to Dwar Jingkyrmen and Bethany Society in Shillong was necessary in order to support these children

Over 1173 children below 14 years with special abilities have been identified in the district.

The District Co-ordinator Inclusive Education, LK Singh informed this.

Meanwhile, the District Social Welfare Officer, Ms. ZJ Lyngdoh said the department has recorded 1393 differently abled people in the district during a survey.

“We have issued identity cards and medical certificates to these people so that they can avail all kinds of facilities from the government such as book grants, scholarship and unemployment allowances”, said Lyngdoh.

Sein Raij Jowai chief OR Challam also spoke in the meeting.

Cultural items and short play were presented on the occasion.

Two injured: Two persons including the president of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Khliehriat Circle, were critically injured in a road mishap on Thursday at Khliehriat.

The KSU chief Satly S Ryngkhlem along with another youth Monlang Khonglah suffered serious injuries when the vehicle they were travelling rammed a wall of a building at Khliehriat.

Both the injured persons had been taken to Bethany Hospital.
