Centre plans awareness prog on RTE

 SHILLONG: Education Minister Prof RC Laloo said that the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has planned year-long community awareness and mobilization programme ‘Shiksha ka Haq Abhiyan’ aimed to increase awareness about the Right to Education Act.

“Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma would be launching the nationwide campaign in the State on November 11,” Prof Laloo informed on Sunday while adding that the campaign which would be launched throughout the country on the same day which also coincides with the National Education Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s first Education Minister Maulana Abul Azad.

Prof Laloo said the Government is hoping that this campaign will change and create an interest at the community level to ensure the success implementation of the RTE in the State.

According to the Education Minister, the campaign will be conducted at the school level which includes year-long activities across the 13 lakh elementary schools in the country.

Meanwhile, a senior government official informed that the Union Ministry has directed that on the occasion schools will read out a letter from the Prime Minister addressed to children during the morning assembly.

A senior government however observed that it has been more than a year that the Right to Education has been in force but so far there is little awareness of the law and its provisions.

“The State government has been given a three-year window to ensure that infrastructure and other such provisions meet the requirements of the law,” he added
