SHILLONG: The general meeting of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation Workers Union (MTCWU) held recently at its head office, initiated a threadbare discussion as per the agenda of the union and threatened to resort to agitation from November 17 if its demands are not met by the government.

The MTCWU said that for the last three months (Aug-Oct, 2011) the workers have not received their salary. On non-receipt of salary, the union leaders along with other members from HO/SG had approached the officers in MTC for payment of salary but they were replied that there is no fund which the MTCWU alleges is a common reply. The MTCWU has also expressed that the workers have not received their revised pay arrears.

The government had already cleared 70% revised pay arrears and has sought the balance 30% before Christmas and met the management for clearance of revised pay arrears.

“We have even met and submitted our memorandum to the Minister of Transport, chairman and other board members for the same. But sad to say that till date the government failed to make any move to provide sanction for clearance of our revised pay, though the management had also made a proposal for providing additional financial assistance,” said President, MTCWU EK Syiem Sutnga in a statement issued here.

The Union has appealed to the Government to come to its aid by according sanction of additional fund to MTC for clearance of the long standing dues before the ensuing Christmas.

The MTCWU resolved that the leaders will once again meet the Chief Minister apprising him of its grievances and if no assurance comes forward against clearance of arrears before Christmas and salary, the MTCWUwill go ahead with its agitation programme.

The MTCWU will observe “Black Flag Day” (November 17-18) followed by a series of other agitation programmes which will conclude on November 30.
