Guwahati: Bodos in Assam have their day on Tuesday with those activists from Andhra Pradesh extending their support for the creation of a separate state for the Bodos.
It is going to be a renewed movement for a Bodo tribal state comprising western and north-central Assam.
Members hailing from the Telengana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) and People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) on Tuesday joined the movement for creation of a separate state for Bodos. Members of these two Andhra Pradesh-based groups lent their support to the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) at Thelamara in north-central Assam during a state demand rally.
The rally coincided with the decision of 22 groups spearheading demands of creation of smaller states across the country to come under one platform. These groups include those seeking Gorkhaland (West Bengal), Purvanchal (Uttar Pradesh) and Bundelkhand (UP and Madhya Pradesh).
“The Bodos’ demand is legitimate because they, like the people in Telengana, have been deprived of their rights over the years,” PUCL president Jaya Vindhyala said at the rally. (NNN)
