SHILLONG: The State Cabinet on Thursday accepted the report of the one-man inquiry committee which gave a clean chit to the Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) following probe into allegations of ‘secret killings’ by the outfit.

Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, while talking to reporters on Thursday, said, “The allegation regarding the secret killing and the existence of mass graves could not be substantiated, so no further action is called for in the matter.”

The State Government, had, in September constituted the one-man inquiry committee under Peter W Ingty, Commissioner and Secretary (Commissioner of Division, Tura), after the Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) alleged that ANVC cadres had secretly killed innocent youths near their camps.

During the course of the probe, a forensic team from Shillong had dug up two sites in Garo Hills (ANVC Liaison office at Youth Hostel, Tura and ANVC camp at Samanda) but failed to recover any human remains, following which the inquiry report gave a clean chit to the ANVC.

Not satisfied with the probe, the GNLA, later, demanded an independent probe by a sitting or retired judge of the Gauhati High Court.
