SHILLONG: Stung by the inaction of the State Government in acceding to their demands the Meghalaya Transport Corporation Workers’ Union (MTCWU) went on an indefinite strike from Thursday.
The union has been demanding salaries pending for the last four months and release of arrears following revision of pay under the Fourth Meghalaya Pay Commission.
On the Government’s assurance of payment of 50 per cent arrears, the MTCWU said that it was only a verbal discussion and the government has not passed any bill or order in this regard.
The Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions and Associations (MJCTUA), an apex trade union body of Meghalaya, and the Apex Bank Union are supporting the MTCWU.
Meanwhile, the State BJP Unit has also expressed concern over non-payment of salaries to the employees of MTCWU which has prompted them to agitate.
“The agitation by the corporation staff has exposed the Governments tall claim of achievements. If a corporation like MTC is running in a loss resulting into non-payment of salaries of staff, people could well understand about the performance of the MUA Government,” said Dipayan Chakraborty, general secretary, BJP State unit.
