SHILLONG: The State Government has warned of intensified raids in the coming days against the use of plastic carry bags in the city.

“Action against plastic carry bags will be further intensified,” Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said on Friday.

According to Lyngdoh, the officers are conducting raids in different parts of the city to ensure that Shillong becomes a plastic-free city.

The State Government had, in October, reimposed the ban on plastic carry bags in the State in line with the Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011. The ban, which came into effect on January 1, 2006, could not be implemented properly in the past owing to certain loopholes in the methods adopted last time.

Meanwhile, Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) CEO CEO Tableland Lyngwa informed on Friday that the SMB has designed a scheme whereby it will sponsor individuals who want to produce carry bags made of alternative materials like jute.
