SHILLONG: Churches all over the city were full of believers on Sunday morning who thronged their respective places of worship to celebrate with utmost joy, the day Jesus Christ was born.
Shillong city wore a bright and colorful look on Sunday morning as hundreds of Christians from children, youth to old people decked up in their best attires, were seen making their way to the church to attend a special service on this special day.
A night before Christmas, as the church bells rang and the world was waiting for the clock to strike twelve, children filled the churches and streets of Shillong, singing a number of Christmas songs reminding many of the restless night when Mary, mother of Jesus and Joseph were awaiting the arrival of their son, Christ at a barn despite the cold and chilly weather.
As children were singing the famous Christmas song-”Joy to the World”, people witnessing them were humming along and swinging away to the melody of the tunes.
“This night is special, unlike other nights and I was singing and clapping my hands along with the others and as soon as the clock struck 12, we were all hugging, kissing and wishing each other ‘Merry Christmas’”, a small child joyfully said.
It may be a wonderful feeling for the children but many adults were of the view that nowadays, Christmas is not celebrated in the true spirit. “The spirit is lost; I fail to notice why people have gone so fond of the worldly pleasure and forgot the true meaning of Christmas”, an adult citizen lamented.
They were of the opinion that Christmas is like preparing people especially young people to get ready for a fashion parade, showcasing their best dress and later end up with the comment-”Your dress is nice, from where did you buy it”.
“This change in the Christmas mood, as alleged by many, is somewhat true and highly disappointing but we will not stop from spreading the word of God. At least, the best thing is that people haven’t forgot about the purpose of the day”, a priest stated.
However, despite these differences, Christmas day was observed in the most joyous and blissful manner all over the city.
