Mumbai: The year 2011 that saw Indian cricket team winning the world cup in Mumbai, beared the brunt of three serial blasts killing 27 people ; death of veterans like actor dev anand, gazal singer Jagjit Singh, painter M F Hussain ; is ending up with the fiasco of the fast of social activist Anna Hazare, which might relieve the Congress led UPA government.
On political front the year remained smooth for ruling congress-NCP alliance as Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar remained in the seats without much trouble.
However, trouble continued for deputy leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde as his nephew and party MLC virtually revolted against him and defeated the party nominee in municipal elections at the hometurf of Mr Munde.
Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman sena continued their political strategies on the ensuing elections of the Brihan Mumbai Municipal corporation elections scheduled in february 2012.
Congress-NCP proved their mantle in the municipal elections in Maharashtra by defeating Sena-BJP alliance despite Anna wave.
The Indian cricket team brought the world cup back to the country after a gap of 28 years. The team was given a special felicitation by President Pratibha Patil at Raj bhavan Mumbai.
But terrrorism continued to torment the financial capital of the country as three serial blasts again shook the city and Zaveri Bazar became the target for the third time since 1993. 27 people lost their life while nearly 130 injured. Entertainment world suffered a major loss in the death of evergreen hero Dev anand, painter M F Hussain, gazal singer Jagjit Singh, and Bhupen Hazarika Nawab Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi also passed away in this year.
However, the bollywood waited with a baited breathe for the news of delivery of Aishwarya rai Bachchan and finally the news of the first daughter of abhishek and aishwarya came on november 17.
However, the fiasco of Anna Hazare agitation in Mumbai may give a huge relief to Congress led UPA government at the Centre as Anna could not bring the huge crowd at MMRDAn grounds , Bandra as he did at Ramlila grounds in New Delhi though it was his home state. Realising that he was not getting the response from the people and due to failing health ; the 74 year old activist quietly preferred to call off his agitation and even his further jail bharo agitation.
