TURA: A false news about a youth dying from his injuries received during an unprovoked attack on Wednesday evening sparked off tension in Phulbari town and its nearby areas forcing security forces to be on alert.
Normalcy returned after the district administration issued a clarification on Thursday.
The problem started during a cricket match in Phulbari field on Wednesday afternoon in which several hundred people were watching the game. The people from behind pushed those in the front row and this created a bad blood among the crowd.
Soon an argument developed among the cricket fans and it was followed some punches were exchanged. Four boys got injured in the fight.
In retaliation a group of local boys caught hold of a youth identified as Karul Islam (19 years) when he was going home and punched him on the face.
By-standers took Karul to Phulbari hospital.
While all these were taking place some trouble makers spread the news that Karul was seriously injured in an attack and was taken to Goalpara civil hospital in serious condition where he passed away.
As the dead report spread like wild fire, angry members of the minority community came out on the streets. Tension began to spread beyond Phulbari and all the way to Tikrikilla, Selsella, Rajabala and Hat Singimari.
Government officials including the police quickly moved in and met elders and revealed to them that the reports were completely false and Karul was resting at his residence. The situation slowly returned to normal but security forces remained on alert to thwart any eventuality.
