Three MeECL engineers kidnapped, one released

TURA: In a brazen show of strength suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants entered the Meghalaya Energy Corporation limited (MeECL) complex at Rongkhon and whisked away three engineers of the power department shortly after midnight of Tuesday. They later released one of the kidnapped officials.

The two engineers who remain in custody of the militant group have been identified as Asst Executive Engineer of the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), Tura, Apus Pothmi and Junior Engineer, REC Garobadha, Boney Majaw.

The junior engineer of MeECL Tura Revenue Sub-Division, Marshal Swer, who was also taken along with his two colleagues was released in Megonggre area of Rongkhon in the dead of the night.

According to sources, the three engineers had returned from a concert at Chandmari playground shortly after 11:30 pm on Tuesday and were about to go to sleep when they heard a knock on their door.

Thinking it to be some of their colleagues they opened the door only to find four young men armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols who told them to accompany them to the jungle.

While moving out on foot from the back of the complex the militants decided to release one of the engineers. They also took away his mobile phone before letting him off.
