One shot dead by ULFA

MANGALDOI (ASSAM): One person was shot dead and another injured by suspected ULFA militants in Darrang district of Assam on Friday evening, police said. Two motorcycle borne youths on Friday shot dead the 33-year old son of a brick kiln owner and injured a bystander at Awlachowka area . The dead has been identified as Ikram Ali Khan. The ULFA had submitted an extortion demand to Ali’s father Yusuf Ali Khan, police added. (PTI)

Mizoram rolls back hike

AIZAWL: Mizoram government rolled back the hike in water tariff in the wake of protest from opposition including the Mizo National Front (MNF) and the consumer unions. The state government increased the water tariff with effect from January, but the Public Health Engineering department on Friday issued a press release asking the consumers to approach the department for refund of excess payment for the month. Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla also announced the roll back in the water tariff hike saying that, “unprecedented increase in water bills might be caused by technical defects.” (PTI)

Repoll in Manipur

IMPHAL: All arrangements have been completed for the repoll in five hill districts of Manipur on Saturday with security and polling personnel reaching at the 34 polling stations. About 28,076 voters would exercise their franchise at 34 polling stations in the hill districts of Ukhrul Churachandpur,Tamenglong, Senapati and Chandel. (PTI)
