The residents of Sylhety Para area in
Laban have been vexed with a pecu
liar problem. These residents complained that heaps of water pipes lie near the entrance of their gates posing inconveniences and threat. Most of these water pipes are running through the entrance gate of these houses in this locality.
A resident of Sylhety Para said that the pipes are posing great danger to the residents. “These pipes, apart from leaking are lying haphazardly on the entrance of every house. Many had become victims in the past with fractured legs and other injuries,” she said.
Another resident said that in Howell Road, Laban these water pipes are laid in an aqueduct which should also be emulated in the colonies and localities in Greater Laban area.
“These water pipes lying over the road has become a menace. Shillong is the only hill station in the country where water pipes are lying over the road and is constantly run over by vehicles and the public,” he said.
A resident of Laban said that these pipes have reduced the width of the road. “The scattered pipes have eaten up the space of the pedestrians. We have to literally incline on the road side slabs/walls etc. when vehicles move in this road,” said a resident of the nearby Masjid Lane in Laban.
These residents also said that that due to the heavy concentration of pipes, they are unable to take out their vehicle smoothly.
“This also damages the pipes on a daily basis. There has to be some solution for this and these pipes should be underground,” he said.
The residents have urged the authorities and the local MLA to find out a solution to this vexed problem in the locality, as is seen in other parts of Laban. (Rajib Roy)
