25 peons to be election observers

Lucknow: Twenty-five peons at the Directorate of Census Operations here have been handpicked to be “micro observers” in the fourth round of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections here Feb 19. The Directorate of Census Operations office at Indiranagar received the Election Commission order two days ago, official sources said Saturday. Also picked with the 25 peons — who form Group D government staff — are senior gazzetted officers. The district election office has sent them a training schedule for Sunday when they will be told how to handle their election related work. Of the 300-odd employees at the Directorate, 143 have been picked for election duty. (IANS)

Six-year-old raped, murdered

Bangalore: The body of a six year-old girl, who was allegedly raped and then smothered to death, has been found in an underconstruction building near here, police said on Saturday. The girl, daughter of daily-wagers, hailed from Siruguppa taluk in Bellary Police said the parents had left the girl alone to look after her two-year-old brother but when they returned they found her missing and lodged a complaint. The girl’s body was found in the building under construction last night, police said, adding, a medical report indicated that she was raped before being smothered. (PTI)

ASI assaulted by bike rider

Bangalore: A 34-year old man was arrested here on Saturday for allegedly assaulting an Assistant Sub-Inspector of police who took action to tow away his motorbike for violating no-parking zone rule. The ASI of Chamarajpet police station was physically assaulted by the bike rider, police said. The man was arrested and a case of assault registered against him. (PTI)

Man arrested for dowry demands

Rourkela (Odisha): A man was arrested for alleged torture and dowry-related death of his wife in Madhusudanpally area of the steel city, police said today. Padman Pallai was allegedly torturing his wife Jayanti for bringing more money from her parents, the police said. Jayanti was fed up with her husband’s behaviour and drank poison on Wednesday and died at Ispat General Hospital yesterday. Jayanti’s father filed a complaint with woman police station here alleging that torture for more dowry led his daughter to commit suicide, police said. Jayanti’s father has also alleged that his son-in-law and other family members have been torturing her with demands for more money. (PTI)

Four persons commit suicide

Rourkela (Odisha): Four persons, including a school girl, allegedly committed suicide in Sundargarh district of Odisha in one day, police said on Saturday. Two persons allegedly committed suicide in the steel city while two other incidents were reported from Lahunipada police station on Friday. The police said a school girl Upasana Tandi (17) hanged herself in her house and another Prafulla Lakra (52) hanged in his house under Sector-15 police limit of the city. Pramod Nayak (30) of Jaribahal village committed suicide by drinking poison, another Sonu Kisan (40) of Natibahal village committed suicide hanging from a tree outside the village under Lahunipada police limit. The police is investigating all four suicide cases and sent the bodies for post-mortem. (PTI)

Three killed in road accident

Jaipur: Three persons, including two of a family, were killed when a container fell off a trolley truck on a car last night in Mansarover area in the city, police said on Saturday. The incident occurred on the B2 bypass, when Promod Kumar, his wife, son and another boy Arpit were on a joy ride in their newly bought car, police said. During the ride, a truck in front of their car hit another vehicle, and its container fell on the car, killing Pramod, his son and Arpit, they said. (PTI)

Five held for protesting against V-Day celebrations

Coimbatore: Five workers of a Tamil Nadu-based Hindu outfit were arrested on Saturday when they attempted to stage a demonstration and destroy Valentine day cards, police said. The Hindu Makkal Katchi workers raised slogans against celebrating Valentine’s Day falling on February 14, which they termed as against Indian culture. When they attempted to tear the cards they were carrying, police prevented and arrested them, sources said, adding, they had not obtained permission to stage a demostration. (PTI)
