AGARTALA: Aimed at solving the vexed Reang refugee problem, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram will make a whirlwind visit to Naisingpara camp in Kanchanpur subdivision on February 18, official sources confirmed here on Monday.
According to the tour schedule, Chidambaram will land at Agartala Airport on February 18 next and head for Naisingpara refugee camp where he will talk to refugee leaders as well as refugees to know the problem in resuming repatriation to home – Mizoram.
Chidambaram is also expected to visit Aizwal to find an amicable solution to the problem.
On February 17, Union Home Secretary RK Singh will arrive here along with high level officials of the MHA. On the same day, a high level meeting involving Tripura government, Mizoram government and MHA officials will be held in the Civic Secretariat.
According to sources, problems related to return of Bru refugees will be discussed at length.
Actually, the Home Secretary will take a note of the views of both states- Tripura and Mizoram.
Over a decade ago, around 32,000 Reang families of Mizoram had taken shelter in Kanchanpur subdivision due to ethnic clashes in the neighbouring state. Since then, a serious of meetings had been held but the problem remains at it was way back in 1997.
Refugee leaders have always been demanding proper rehabilitation and safety after their much awaited return to Mizoram.
Now, the Centre wants to break the ice centering around return of Reang refugees by convincing both Mizoram government as well as refugee leaders.
