Suspected contaminated tea claims five lives in Baran

Kota: Five persons, including a minor girl, were on Thursday killed and as many hospitalised after consuming tea, suspected to be contaminated, in Baran district of Rajasthan. The victims, all belonging to Sehriya community in Koela village, drank tea at Kali Devi’s house this morning. Soon they complained of severe abdominal pain and vomiting and were rushed to a nearby hospital in Baran. Kali, her parents Birbal and Bacchi Bai, Kali’s husband Ramj lal and their daughter Sajan were declared dead by the doctors, while Kali’s son Raju and neighbours Ramswaroop, Surendra, Pinki and Banwari are under treatment, they said. The matter is under investigation, they added. (PTI)

Former Bihar minister passes away

Patna: RJD leader and former Bihar minister Mahavir Prasad on Thursday died after protracted illness at Indira Gandhi Institute for Medical Science(IGIMS) here, party members said. He was 79. Prasad was MLA from a constituency in Darbhanga district four times in a row and was health minister in the erstwhile Lalu-Rabri cabinet. He would be cremated with full state honours. Expressing profound shock and grief at the demise of the RJD leader, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar described him as a renowned leader and social activist. RJD chief Lalu Prasad, former chief minister Rabri Devi, RJD leaders Abdul Bari Siddiqui, Ram Chandera Purve, Ram Kripal Yadav and Bihar Youth Congress president Lalan Kumar also condoled his death. Teacher arrested, fire-arms seized

Chhapra: A school teacher was arrested and a carbine seized from his possession at Arna village under Dariyapur police station area in Saran district late on Wednesday night. Police said here acting on a tip off, a raid was conducted at the residence of Jaiprakash Rai at Arna village leading to recovery of a sophisticated carbine besides, four live cartridges. Rai was arrested and was being interrogated. (UNI)

Daughter kills father

Gopalganj: A daughter along with her husband, killed her father at Singhorva village under Singhwalia police station area in the district late on Wednesday night. Police here said that Sushila, along with her husband Hari Kishore Parit, killed her father Bhikhu Parit by strangulating him following differences over some domestic issue. The couple escaped from the spot after the murder, police said. Raids were on to nab them. The body of Bhikhu Parit had been sent for post-mortem, police added. (UNI)

1 killed as elephant runs amok

Thrissur: In an unfortunate incident a motorcyclist was gored to death and as many as ten people were injured, two of them seriously, when an elephant ran amok at Kecheri, near Kunnamkulam, in the district on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Aloysius (48), a native of Pavaratty, near Kecheri, police said, adding the deceased was on his motor cycle.

Sikhs protest outside CM’s residence

New Delhi: Over 200 people from the Sikh community gathered outside Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit’s residence Thursday afternoon to protest the decision to commute the life sentence of Kishori Lal — convicted for the murder of eight Sikhs during the 1984 riots, police said. Kishori Lal, 48, nicknamed “butcher of Trilokpuri” in east Delhi, was convicted for stabbing many people to death in the neighbourhood during the riots. Delhi Lt. Governor Tejender Khanna took the decision Sunday to commute the life sentence of Kishori LaL reportedly on account of his “good conduct” in prison. (IANS)
