SHILLONG: A city has granted bail to former branch manager of United Bank of India (UBI), Mawlai Nonglum Branch, Dambarudhar Deka, who was arrested on December 8 last year and subsequently suspended by the UBI for accepting bribe. It maybe mentioned that Deka demanded bribe from one Michael Bareh, who went to the branch seeking loan under Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP). He was arrested under Prevention of Corruption Act.
Meanwhile, a bank source questioned the way police handled the case. “The FIR was filed by an individual and we came to know that he was arrested by the police following pressure from a certain NGO,” the source said.
The accused was not even granted time to file a counter FIR, the source said adding that the case is handled directly by the police which has to prove whether the accused was really guilty under the act under which he was arrested.
