Tura: Suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants unsuccessfully tried to blast a police vehicle packed with personnel in remote Siju area of South Garo Hills on Friday morning.

The militants planted a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the side of a road at between Jadigittim and Siju area and detonated the bomb just as a police gypsy was passing through.

A police sub-inspector and his team of armed personnel were going to Baghmara from Nangalbibra police station when the blast occurred at 10:30 am.

The explosion ripped open the side of the road but miraculously missed hitting the passing vehicle. Police personnel immediately jumped out of the vehicles and opened fire from their weapons towards the thick undergrowth to prevent retaliatory attacks by the guerillas hiding in the forest cover.A search of the area later revealed a long line of detonation wires and pellets used for packing the explosive.”It was handiwork of GNLA commander Rakkam” said police from Baghmara.Meanwhile, two GNLA cadres surrendered before Tura police on Thursday and handed over one hand grenade. The two militants have been identified as Jiten Marak (38) and Telit Marak (27). The duo hailed from Chokpot region of South Garo Hills.
