SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Tuesday cleared the air regarding his decision to create three new districts in the State, saying that it was an attempt to bring administration and governance closer to the people.
He also stated that his government was open to the idea of creation of more districts in the State.
“We need to understand that it is difficult to provide good governance to the people since the present districts are quite big in size. We want the districts to be spread over a small area so that people can benefit from the delivery system and the process of governance,” Dr Sangma said while speaking to reporters here on Tuesday.
Dr Sangma further stated civil sub-divisions are created so that they may be upgraded into districts as and when the need arises.
More civil sub-divisions would be upgraded into districts in the coming years, he announced.
On the demand for upgrading Mawkyrwat civil sub-division into a district, the Chief Minister said, “We will have to take a decision collectively in this regard. I will consider the actual needs of the people and not from the political perspective.”
Despite several queries, Dr Sangma did not disclose the financial implications involved in creation of the new districts, though he claimed that the State has the funds.
On the time frame set for upgradation of the three civil sub-divisions into districts, he said that the government was already working out the details. He claimed that the State Government had laid the case before the Finance Commission for providing the requisite funds.
