Shillong: The CBI on Tuesday caught a senior army engineer, Major Mohan Singh, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000.
According to sources, posted at the Military Engineering Services, Umroi Cantonment, near here, Singh had demanded Rs 50,000 from a contractor as bribe for bills cleared, pending for clearance and also for issuing fresh work order for maintenance work in the Army cantonment.
Acting on a tip off, CBI officials caught him accepting Rs 25,000 as part of the payment of the demanded amount.
Meanwhile, the Army official fainted on Wednesday when the CBI sleuths were on the verge of arresting him.
“When we were in the process of arresting Singh, he fainted and he was later rushed to Military hospital in Shillong for treatment. Therefore, we have not arrested him, but he would be soon arrested once he is physical fit, “a CBI official said on condition of anonymity. The CBI had registered a case against Singh under Prevention of Corruption, Act. (With inputs from UNI)
