By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: Two second half goals led Shillong Lajong FC to their first victory in the fourth Edition of the E K Nayanar Memorial Gold Cup played at Kozhikode on Wednesday.

After a goalless first half, Lajong drew first blood in the 62nd minute through a Seikhohao Tuboi goal. The Reds doubled the lead in the dying moments of the match after Renedy Singh converted a penalty in the 88th minute. Tuboi, who was the captain for the game, was awarded the man-of-the-match.

Prior to the match, Lajong coach Pradhyum Reddy was confident of his sides’ chances against the armymen. It may be mentioned that Lajong had been testing its bench strength going into the fianl stage of the I-League and Reddy preferred to give the younger lot in the team the much needed exposure for ‘boosting their confidence’.

In the first match, Lajong was held by Mumbai FC who on Wednesday defeated Southern Samity 3-1.

Mumbai took the lead in the first minute through Ebi Sukore Theophilus, while Dhanachandra Singh scored the second goal in the 77th. Gbeneme Friday completed the tally with a goal in the 80th minute.

The consolation goal for Southern Samity was scored by Zico Zoremsanga in the 75th minute. (With inputs from PTI)
