Demand for a separate district

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee (JAC), a conglomerate of various political parties, NGOs and traditional bodies of Mairang in West Khasi Hills district has decided to intensify its demand for a separate district.

The JAC has called for a night road blockade on Saturday from 7 pm till 5 am the following day (Sunday).

The night road blockade would again commence from Monday and would continue indefinitely, the JAC stated.

JAC chairman Lawrence Basaiawmoit informed that they have the support of the general public in their fight for a separate district.

“Mairang deserves to be upgraded as a district. It is a long-pending aspiration of the people of the area,” he said. Basaiawmoit also castigated the politicians who come to Mairang Sub-Division every year to pay tribute to legendary Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing, but do not care about the sentiments of the people of the area.
