Slow food festival

 SHILLONG: The Lum Lyngkien Sohphie Cluster Federation, a conglomerate of Self Help Groups organized Slow Food Festival in Iewrynghep village, Mawkynrew Block in collaboration with Meghalaya Rural Development Society (MRDS) EKH .

Participants included farmers, traders and members of 17 SHGs from Iewrynghep and adjoining villages.

The occasion was graced by Teilang Khyriem, Project Manager MRDS EKH, Mr. KD Kharkongor from the Department of Agriculture and others.

Speaking on the occasion, Kharkongor said that indigenous food is known to be good for health which is in sharp contrast to Fast Food.

He also encouraged the local farmers to maintain the Indigenous Traditional Knowledge as this will greatly help them and promote livelihood.

“You should not be swayed away by something that will destroy nature or adopt means that are harmful to both man and environment,” said Mr. Kharkongor.

Echoing this, Khyriem said that the world is change fast and it is evident from the climate hampering all human activities including

agriculture which is the backbone of the economy of the nation. He also informed many more such events will be held with the vision of encouraging indigenous products by local farmers. Also such events will bring a closer relationship between man and nature.

Today’s event was also an opportunity for the farmers to directly interact with the consumers and traders through sales and exhibitions of their local products.
