Colombo: A leading newspaper here Tuesday denounced India’s decision to vote for a US resolution on Sri Lanka’s “war crimes”, saying New Delhi’s “gobbledygook defies comprehension”.

“India continues to blow hot and cold about the US resolution against Sri Lanka in Geneva,” the Island said in an editorial. It referred to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement Monday that India could vote for the resolution if it covered “our objectives” vis-a-vis the betterment of Sri Lanka’s Tamil minority.

“It was only the other day that the Indian government made it very clear that it was opposed to any country-specific resolution at the UNHRC,” the Island pointed out.”We thought India had taken a principled stand on the issue.”What are India’s real ‘objectives’ that Prime Minister Singh says his government is trying to achieve through its support for the US resolution?

“He has specified only one of them – a future for the Tamil community in Sri Lanka based on equality, dignity, justice and respect’. But, what are the other ‘objectives’? He has left one none the wiser!”

Whie berating New Delhi for “running with the hare and hunting with the hounds”, it praised Tamil weekly ‘Thuglak’ editor and MP Cho S. Ramaswamy, who it said “had the courage to swim against the tide”.The daily warned that if the US resolution was ratified in Geneva, “that will set a very bad precedent and no country, unless it is an ally of the US, will be safe.
