JOWAI: Several Jaintia Hills-based NGOs including the Jaintia Students’ Union, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People and the Laskein Block Welfare Organisation (LBWO) have demanded upgradation of the Laskein Community and Rural Development Block (C&RD) to Civil Sub-Division.

The decision to this effect was taken in a meeting organised by the LBWO at Raliang recently.

The meeting was attended by more than 40 local headmen of various village councils.

“The demand for upgradation of the Laskein block is not new to the government as the LBWO has been making this demand since 2003”, LBWO Secretary Phriskus Sutnga said.

“Laskein block is one of the biggest blocks in Jaintia Hills district and we feel that it is high time for the government to take necessary step to upgrade it to a civil Sub-division,” he said.

The leaders of LBWO and village elders will meet the Chief Minister in this context shortly.

Echoing similar view, the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) leader Elnathan Pale said, “This is one of the long pending demand of the JSU”.

“We are thankful to the MUA Government for upgrading Khliehriat to Civil Sub-Division and we request the government to shift Khliehriat Civil Sub-Division to Laskein Block”, he added.

Meanwhile, FKJGP leader Tuesday Lytep said the up gradation of the block to a sub-division level would bring the government closer to the people of the area.
