SHILLONG: The State BJP has welcomed the campaign of former bureaucrat P Sivakami that the next President of India should be from the Christian community.

“We totally endorse to the campaign of the former bureaucrat that the next President of India should be from the Christian Community,” BJP State President HS Syiemlieh said in a statement on Tuesday which is a day after Sivakami launched her campaign in the State.

According to the State BJP president, in 1992, the BJP supported late Prof GG Swell from Meghalaya who was a Christian for the post.

“In 2002 also the party had a mind to get PC Alexander as the President of the country but the Congress opposed Alexander to be the President.

So the BJP-led NDA had proposed the name of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam who later was elected as President of India and PC Alexander was elected to Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra through the support of BJP,” the Meghalaya BJP said in a statement.

It may be recalled that Sivakami, who was in Shillong on Monday, said it was high time that “we break the image” that only Muslims and Hindus are secular and can be chosen for the top Constitutional post, but Christians too are equally secular in a secular country like India.

“India is a secular country. Don’t you find that Christians also are equally secular?” Sivakami asked.
